Amendment to Reform Congress

Amend The Constitution

The Amendment to Reform Congress is a movement to encourage the states to call for a Constitutional Convention to consider an amendment to the United States Constitution, the primary goal of which is to rein in Congress’ excesses and put our Country back on the road to a government by the people. Congress has become an entity that does not listen to its constituents who sent them to Washington, controls the elective process, and whose members engage in wasteful spending for the sole purpose of keeping themselves in power.

The United States fought a revolution against a King and Parliament to gain the liberty and right to self determination, which England had systematically denied the citizens of the 13 colonies. The Founding Fathers drafted the Constitution, a unique document that gave power directly to the people -- not to another King or other ruling class. This independence allowed the United States to grow in ways unknown to any prior civilization, primarily because it granted individual citizens the freedom to create wealth without the interference of a centralized government.

Over time, however, the ideals of the Founding Fathers have been reinterpreted to develop a new ruling class: representatives interested almost exclusively in their own reelection. The crisis that has developed over the past year has only sharpened the long standing and oft-repeated complaints that most congressmen do not have any interest in listening to their constituents’ concerns, focusing instead on their own personal agendas and insider political games.

Our Declaration of Independence...

The Amendment

The Constitutional Amendment proposed to be considered will, if ratified:

  • Stop Congress from passing laws whose provisions do not apply to its members and other Federal employees, such as the pending healthcare bill. For additional examples of such laws, see the list in the Hall of Shame section.
  • Prevent Congress from granting special privileges that the ordinary citizen does not enjoy, such as the ability to select how their Federal Retirement funds are invested, while requiring everyone else to participate in the underperforming and fiscally mismanaged Social Security system.
  • Impose term limits that will allow new representatives to enter Congress unimpaired by the myriad rules and privileges that currently allow incumbents to retain their jobs despite poor performance, corruption, or even senility. The Founding Fathers never envisioned the possibility of career politicians who remain in Washington for 30, 40, or 50 years, having never worked in any other field.

Our goal is to fulfill the purpose of Article V of the Constitution, which provides the manner by which amendments to the Constitution may be approved. Amendments may be proposed by either 2/3 of Congress or 2/3 of the state legislatures. While it has been over 200 years since the last Constitutional Convention, it is time for the Citizens of the United States to rise up and assert their rights under the Constitution to end the excesses of certain entrenched members of Congress who consider themselves to be a new ruling elite.

The issues we aim to address are neither conservative nor liberal, neither Republican nor Democratic in nature, and they transcend the ideals of all special interest groups. Our movement is critical to, and will fundamentally transform, the future of the United States.

We need your help!

Success will require much time and hard work. While no members of our organizing committee have ever been seriously involved in politics until this moment, we uniformly believe that the efforts made by Congress to protect and enhance its self-serving control of power and unwillingness to listen to the People of the United States necessitate our action and reassert of our rights as citizens.

Each state will need to individually propose their own call for a Convention and 34 states are needed to satisfy the 2/3 requirement of Article V. Please visit and sign the petition to call for a Constitutional Convention. Please also feel free to download a hard copy of the petition and distribute it throughout your community. Join our Forum and discussions with members of our community. Contact your state legislators and hold them accountable to helping to reform Congress. Finally, we need committed volunteers to get the word out to their neighbors and friends to join the movement.
